The continuity of change is characteristic of the biography of the Tanzgeiger.

Their repertoire has changed over the years and so have the members of the group. What unites the seven musicians, however, is their commitment to their own musical roots, their keen ear for the foreign, and their eagerness to cross borders.

When they travel the world with their music, from Mumbai via Tegernsee to Chicago, it is a matter of give and take. The giving is self-explanatory, but also the taking comes naturally: Someone briefly sings or plays a melody, and the Tanzgeiger pick it up immediately: the first voice is joined by the second, then come the bass and the harmony as well as a tenor or counter-melody from the brass section, on and on they play, transpose, vary, and improvise. Thus, instead of tourist memorabilia, it is musical souvenirs that they bring with them in their hand luggage, and that remain in their repertoire. Be it Kolomejka, Hungarisch, or Finnish Jenkka – the Tanzgeiger absorb the melodies and shape them in their own style. They are never just replica of an original, they are always original themselves.

Geographical borders are not the only ones to cross, sometimes it's chronological boarders they thrive to overcome. Music ethnologist Rudi Pietsch, founder and Prímás of the Tanzgeiger for decades, has saved many dance music pieces from moldering in dusty archives and arranged them for his band. Especially landler, older than those of Franz Schubert, have come back to life through him. The Tanzgeiger do away with the boundaries between the normally strictly separated worlds of art music and popular music when they interpret popular music in a highly artistic manner just as they perform art music in an entertaining way.

Parties and festivals, dance events, congresses, and concerts – there are as many occasions for the Tanzgeiger to play as there are good reasons to enjoy life. They present themselves powerful, intimate, virtuoso and unpredictably captivating.
